Village of Carleton, MILagoon biosolids removal and closureFollowing the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant, BioTech Agronomics was contracted by the Village of Carleton to remove the accumulated biosolids from five (5) abandoned lagoons with total surface area of approximately 20 acres in anticipation of final closure. BioTech Agronomics prepared a residuals management plan (RMP) and obtained approval from MDEQ to discharge the treated wastewater and begin land application. Because of our excellent rapport with MDEQ staff, this process was fast tracked. Equipment was immediately mobilized to remove the liquid biosolids from one of the cells for subsurface injection. Concurrently, equipment was mobilized to windrow the biosolids in the remaining cells to expedite natural dewatering. These windrows were routinely agitated until the material could be excavated and hauled to land application sites. Approximately, 7000 cubic yards of dewatered biosolids were land applied with a dry spreader and incorporated into the soils utilizing a disc. Finally, BioTech Agronomics coordinated with MDEQ to obtain final approval for closure of the lagoons.
