MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS, WATERLOO
Lagoon biosolids removal, land application and lagoon demolition
Following the closing of the Waterloo Prison, BioTech Agronomics was contracted by the Michigan
Department of Corrections to remove the accumulated biosolids from two (2) abandoned lagoons
in anticipation of final lagoon closure and demolition. BioTech Agronomics prepared a residuals management
plan (RMP) and obtained approval from MDEQ to discharge the treated wastewater and begin land
application. The liquid biosolids from both of the cells was removed and subsurface injected.
Following biosolids removal, BioTech Agronomics developed a closure plan and coordinated with MDEQ to obtain
final approval for closure of the lagoons. The pumping station structures, valve chambers and
both cells were demolished by BioTech Agronomics and the site was graded to a natural state and re-vegetated.
